The 60-second conditioning wait isn't a stall tactic. Here's what's happening to hair while the kiddo counts.

Every conditioner bottle ever made tells you to leave it on for a minute, and most of us have quietly assumed this was filler advice, the haircare equivalent of "results may vary." But it isn't. The minute is doing something specific, and it's worth knowing what.

Picture a single strand.

Under high magnification, it isn't smooth. The outer layer, the cuticle, is made of overlapping scales, a bit like roof tiles or the bracts on a pinecone. When hair is healthy and happy, those scales lie flat and the strand feels soft. When hair is wet, freshly washed, or roughed up by a day of play, the scales lift and catch on each other. That catching is what you feel as a tangle, and what you see as dullness.

Conditioner works by smoothing those lifted scales back down. The conditioning ingredients are attracted to the damaged, lifted spots on the strand, which happen to be exactly where help is needed most. They settle onto the surface and lay the cuticle flat again. But this isn't instant. It's a coating process, and coating takes a moment to spread evenly from root area to ends, especially on a head of hair with a few thousand strands competing for attention.

Rinse too soon and you've washed away
half the work before it finished.

That's what the minute is for. It's not the bottle being precious. It's the time it physically takes for the ingredients to find the rough spots and do the smoothing.
